I've received so many requests for these Douglas Fir templated choir boy reproductions and I'm thrilled to offer them to you starting this holiday season of 2026!   Choir boy #4 is a contemporary version based on the classic.  Because I believe it's a powerful and impactful way to ensure that equity and diversity are seen across the board, I have hand drawn this African American boy into the lineup of choir boys as they've been known for decades.

Please note: See photos for the original paper templates sold by Douglas Fir in the 1950's - including photos of the original signs with their accessory signs like the wreath and the "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" sheet music sign.  The templates were purchased at neighborhood lumber stores and designed to be pasted/shellacked onto plywood sheets then cut out by DIY'ers in their home shop or garage.  The kit originally came with three choir boy figures with each stacked layer built in sequence to give it a more dimensional appearance.  All weathering and textural imperfections are intentional and artfully applied.  If you prefer more subtle weathering effects than what is shown in the product photo, please order first then send a message by replying to the order confirmation email.

Every sign begins with vintage Christmas artwork — the kind you’d find on an old postcard, tucked inside a grandparents’ attic box, or printed in a storefront window on a snowy main street. I take those originals and carefully retrace them by hand on the iPad, paying attention to the tiny details most people wouldn’t think to look for. Ink breaks, soft texture, aging paper tone — the little things that make something feel truly vintage, not just “retro styled.”

From there, I bring everything into Illustrator and Photoshop to gently restore color, add weathering, and give each piece that warm, time-earned character. It’s a slow, intentional process, and the end result has a richness that simply doesn’t translate on a screen. Many customers tell me the signs look even better in person, and that the details are far more beautiful than the thumbnail shows.

I leave signs without hanging holes or hardware because everyone displays differently. Lean it, hang it, frame it, screw it to your mailbox post, stake it outside — whatever suits your home. If you do want to drill some holes in it, a little painter’s tape on the surface helps prevent wiggly drillbit marks if you slip.
